A Guide to Creating an Editorial and Elevated Look
Your engagement session is the beginning of documenting your story together. These photographs often become some of the most cherished images you will have leading into your wedding day. They appear on save the dates, wedding websites, and eventually become framed memories in your home.
Because of that, what you wear plays an important role in how the photos feel. Thoughtful wardrobe choices help create images that feel timeless, polished, and editorial rather than overly casual or trendy.
When couples put a little intention into their wardrobe, the final gallery feels elevated and cohesive while still feeling natural and true to you.
This guide will help you choose outfits that photograph beautifully while keeping the overall feel relaxed and effortless.
⸻
Aim for Elevated Everyday Style
The best engagement session outfits fall somewhere between casual and formal. Think polished everyday style rather than jeans and a basic t shirt.
For women, a beautiful knit sweater paired with tailored pants, a midi skirt, or dark denim can photograph beautifully. Soft textures add depth to images and help create a romantic, relaxed feel.
For men, a polo paired with a quarter zip sweater or a well fitted button down shirt is always a great option. A sport coat layered over a shirt with dark jeans also adds a level of refinement without feeling overly formal.
These types of outfits photograph incredibly well because they feel natural while still looking thoughtful and elevated.
⸻
Dressing for Cooler Weather
If your engagement session takes place in early spring, fall, or on a breezy lakeshore evening, layering can add both warmth and style.
One of the most sophisticated options for women is a long trench coat layered over your outfit. A neutral trench coat instantly elevates the look of your photos and adds movement and elegance to the images. The structure of a coat like this can create a beautiful editorial feel that looks effortless in photographs.
Think classic tones like beige, camel, cream, or black. These colors pair beautifully with almost any outfit and photograph wonderfully in natural light.
For men, layering with a quarter zip sweater, jacket, or sport coat can create a balanced and polished look alongside a trench coat or sweater.

⸻
Dressing for Summer Engagement Sessions
If your session takes place in the middle of summer, comfort becomes just as important as style.
Instead of a knit sweater, women may want to choose a lightweight sun dress or maxi dress. Dresses with movement photograph beautifully and create a soft, romantic look in outdoor settings.
A casual but polished option could also be a pair of well fitted jeans paired with a blouse. This keeps the look relaxed but still elevated enough to photograph well.
For men, a short sleeve button down or polo paired with light trousers or clean denim works wonderfully during warm weather sessions.
The goal is to stay comfortable while still choosing pieces that feel polished and intentional.

⸻
Choose Timeless Colors
Color can make a huge difference in the overall feel of your photos.
I always recommend choosing colors that feel neutral and cohesive rather than overly bright or busy. Neutral tones help keep the focus on the connection between the two of you rather than the clothing itself.
Beautiful color options include:
cream
black
white
soft blues
warm beige
sage
charcoal
camel
These tones photograph beautifully in natural environments and will keep your images feeling timeless for years to come.

⸻
Hair and Styling
For your first outfit, wearing your hair down can create a soft and relaxed look that feels romantic and effortless. Gentle waves or natural movement photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on your expressions and connection.
Think of styling that feels like a polished version of your everyday look rather than something dramatically different from how you normally feel comfortable.
Confidence always photographs best.
⸻
Add a Second Formal Look
One of my favorite ways to elevate an engagement session is by bringing a second outfit that feels more formal.
After capturing images in your relaxed outfit, changing into something more elevated creates beautiful variety within your gallery.
For women, a long black dress is always a stunning choice. The movement of a longer dress adds elegance and creates a timeless silhouette in photographs.
Another beautiful option is a white dress if you prefer something that feels a little more bridal and romantic.
Pair this more formal look with a low bun hairstyle. A sleek low bun creates a refined and sophisticated appearance that photographs beautifully and gives the images an editorial feel.
For men, a black suit or tailored jacket with dress trousers complements either dress option perfectly. A crisp white shirt underneath keeps the overall look clean and timeless.
This second outfit often creates some of the most striking and magazine worthy images of the entire session.

⸻
Dress for the Location
One of the easiest ways to create an elevated engagement gallery is to make sure your outfits feel natural within the setting of your photos. Your clothing should complement the environment rather than compete with it. When everything feels cohesive, the images instantly look more refined and intentional.
For example, if we are photographing your engagement session in a downtown setting with classic architecture, a sleek black gown, heels, or a tailored suit can look incredibly elegant. City locations naturally lend themselves to more formal styling. Think structured pieces, darker colors, and clean silhouettes that match the sophistication of the surroundings.
On the other hand, if your session takes place in a wooded park, on a beach, or out in the countryside, you will usually want something a little softer and more relaxed. Flowing dresses, boots, sweaters, vests, or elevated casual pieces tend to photograph beautifully in these environments and feel much more natural within the landscape.
The same idea applies to indoor locations as well. A romantic cocktail dress works perfectly for a moody, candlelit bar or upscale restaurant. Meanwhile, a ranch or western setting pairs beautifully with denim, boots, turquoise jewelry, and classic western touches.
The goal is simple. Your outfits should feel like they belong in the location you chose. When the wardrobe and the environment work together, the result is a gallery that feels timeless, cohesive, and effortlessly elevated.

____
Why Wardrobe Matters
Clothing may seem like a small detail, but it has a huge impact on the final look of your engagement gallery.
When couples choose outfits that feel elevated and timeless, the images instantly feel more refined and intentional. They become photographs that will still look beautiful decades from now.
Your engagement season is a special chapter in your story, and dressing with intention helps honor that moment in a meaningful way.
⸻
The Little Details Matter: Grooming & Final Touches
When planning what to wear for your engagement photos, the small details often make the biggest difference. Your hands will be photographed more than you might expect during an engagement session. From close up ring photos to moments where you are holding hands, brushing hair away, or wrapped in an embrace. Because of this, make sure your nails are clean, shaped, and polished. Neutral nail colors photograph beautifully and feel timeless, but the most important thing is that polish is fresh and not chipped. This applies to men as well. Clean trimmed nails make a subtle but noticeable difference in photographs.
If you plan to have your hair touched up, try to schedule highlights, color appointments, or trims about a week before your session. This gives your hair time to settle and look natural rather than freshly styled. The same goes for brows. If you typically have your brows waxed or threaded, aim to do this about forty eight hours before your session so any redness has time to fade.
Think about the overall polished look you want to achieve. Moisturized skin, neatly groomed facial hair, and wrinkle free clothing all help elevate the final result. Steam or press outfits ahead of time and avoid trying something brand new the morning of your session. When everything feels comfortable and prepared, you will naturally feel more confident in front of the camera.
_____
Spray Tans & Self Tanner
If you plan to use self tanner or get a spray tan for your engagement photos, timing makes a big difference. The ideal time is about two to three days before your session. This allows the color to fully develop and settle into a natural tone rather than looking freshly applied.
Giving it a couple of days also allows you to shower and rinse off any excess bronzer so it will not transfer onto clothing. Fresh spray tans can sometimes appear slightly orange or uneven on camera, so avoiding the day before or the day of your shoot is best.
If you are trying a new product or salon, consider testing it a week or two beforehand. A subtle, natural glow photographs beautifully and helps you look polished without distracting from the overall look of your photos.
____
A Final Thought
The most important thing to remember is that your engagement session should feel like you. Choose pieces that feel comfortable, confident, and authentic while still leaning slightly elevated from everyday wear.
If you ever feel unsure about what to wear, I am always happy to help guide my couples through the process. Many couples even send photos of their outfit options beforehand so we can make sure everything flows beautifully together.
The goal is simple.
To create engagement photos that feel timeless, effortless, and elevated while telling the story of your relationship.
