There is something about Mackinac Island that feels untouched in the best possible way. No cars rushing past. No city noise. Just horse drawn carriages, waterfront views, charming cottages, and the kind of stillness that makes moments feel bigger. It is the kind of place where memories settle deep into your heart, which is exactly why so many couples choose it for one of the most important moments of their lives: getting engaged.
As a wedding photographer, I have had the honor of capturing proposals across the island, and every single one feels magical in its own way. From hidden garden paths to iconic waterfront overlooks, Mackinac Island creates the perfect backdrop for the beginning of a love story. Recently, I photographed Jake and Alyssa’s proposal at The Inn at Stonecliffe, and it was the perfect reminder of why this island continues to steal hearts season after season.

Tucked away on the western bluff of the island, The Inn at Stonecliffe feels peaceful, luxurious, and intimate all at once. The property overlooks the sparkling waters of Lake Huron, offering some of the most breathtaking sunset views on the island. Between the historic mansion, manicured grounds, stone pathways, and quiet elegance, it truly feels like stepping into another world.
Jake planned the sweetest surprise proposal for Alyssa during what she thought was simply a graduation getaway trip to celebrate finishing college. Surrounded by the beauty of Stonecliffe and the calmness of the island, he got down on one knee and asked her to spend forever with him. Watching her reaction unfold against the scenic backdrop was such an emotional and beautiful moment to document.
One of my favorite things about photographing proposals at Stonecliffe is how effortlessly romantic every corner feels. Whether you are tucked beneath the trees, walking through the gardens, or standing along the bluff overlooking the water, the scenery elevates every image into something timeless and editorial.

Another unforgettable proposal I photographed took place last fall in the iconic Secret Garden for Tyler and Abbey. If you know Mackinac Island well, you know the Secret Garden is one of the island’s most enchanting hidden spots. Quiet pathways, blooming florals, ivy covered stonework, and intimate tucked away corners make it feel almost storybook-like.
The Secret Garden has quickly become one of the hottest spots for proposals because it offers privacy while still feeling incredibly elegant and romantic. There is something special about the way the light filters through the garden in the evenings, creating the dreamiest atmosphere for photographs.
Tyler and Abbey’s proposal was emotional, joyful, and incredibly heartfelt. Moments like those are why I love documenting engagements so much. There is such a rawness to it all. The nervous excitement beforehand, the tears, the laughter afterward, and the realization that life is about to change forever.

There is perhaps no place more iconic on Mackinac Island than Grand Hotel. From the moment you walk onto the property, it feels grand, timeless, and overflowing with romance. The stunning white exterior, perfectly manicured gardens, and breathtaking waterfront views make it one of the dreamiest places on the island for an engagement or proposal.
One of the most beautiful features of the property is the famous Esther Williams Swimming Pool and fountain area, which creates such an elegant backdrop for photographs. The sound of the water, the vibrant florals surrounding the grounds, and the historic architecture all come together to create something truly unforgettable.
Of course, the Grand Hotel is also known for having the world’s longest front porch, stretching nearly the entire length of the hotel with sweeping views of the Straits of Mackinac. There is something so romantic about walking hand in hand along the porch as horse carriages pass below and sailboats drift across the water. Especially during golden hour, the light there feels absolutely magical for engagement portraits.
For couples dreaming of a classic and elevated Mackinac Island proposal, the Grand Hotel offers an atmosphere that feels straight out of a movie.

On the opposite side of the island, Mission Point Resort offers a softer, coastal kind of romance. The waterfront gazebo near the shoreline is one of the sweetest locations for a proposal, especially for couples wanting a peaceful and intimate setting with beautiful lake views.
The sound of the waves rolling in, Adirondack chairs scattered along the lawn, and the open waterfront scenery create such a calm and emotional atmosphere. The gazebo itself frames couples beautifully in photographs while still showcasing the natural beauty of Mackinac Island all around them.
Mission Point is especially stunning during sunrise and sunset when the sky reflects across the water and everything feels quiet and still. It is the perfect spot for couples who love a relaxed yet elegant lakeside feel for their engagement story.

If you are looking for a proposal location that feels adventurous and unforgettable, Arch Rock is one of the most incredible spots on the island. Towering high above Lake Huron, Arch Rock offers panoramic views of the sparkling blue water and surrounding cliffs that honestly feel unreal in person.
The natural limestone arch has become one of Mackinac Island’s most photographed landmarks, and for good reason. It combines the rugged beauty of nature with the romance and charm the island is known for.
There is something incredibly emotional about standing together overlooking the water from such a breathtaking height while beginning the next chapter of your lives together. Whether you choose to propose near the overlook at sunrise with soft pastel skies or during golden hour as the sun lights up the cliffs, Arch Rock creates an unforgettable setting for engagement photos that feel adventurous, timeless, and deeply connected to the beauty of Mackinac Island itself.

One of the greatest honors as a photographer is not just documenting a wedding day, but walking alongside couples from the very beginning of their story. From the proposal to engagement photos to the wedding day itself, there is something incredibly meaningful about preserving each chapter as it unfolds.
Mackinac Island has become one of my favorite places to photograph because it naturally slows people down. Couples become fully present with one another here. The moments feel genuine, emotional, and deeply connected, which always shines through in photographs.
Whether you are planning an intimate surprise proposal in the Secret Garden, a luxurious getaway engagement at The Inn at Stonecliffe, or dreaming about saying yes somewhere along the island shoreline, I would absolutely love to help capture it for you. These are the moments that become part of your legacy, and they deserve to be documented beautifully.
From the excitement of “yes” all the way to walking down the aisle, your story deserves to be remembered in a way that feels timeless, emotional, and true to you.

Your proposal is more than just a question. It is the beginning of your legacy together. The tears, the excitement, the nervous anticipation beforehand, and the joy afterward deserve to be preserved in a way that feels timeless and true to your story.
